Ethical Style: Why Fashion Needs to Get Political
As the ethical fashion world has grown to tackle more problems and reach more markets—and socially conscious fashion becomes imperceptible from other clothing on the rack—the movement’s political underpinnings have decentralized. Discussion of ethical fashion has exploded in recent years, but without the clarity of a “Save the Whales” tee, we’re not totally sure what we’re aware of anymore. Fashion needs a rebirth of the political spirit—a serious consumer-focused movement to help us navigate the trends.
I visited Ten Thousand Villages with my environmental studies class yesterday, and I’m buzzing with excitement regarding fair trade and fashion. I think it’s so important that we make better choices as consumers, and designers and big retail brands start making decisions with their hearts instead of their dollar-sign-popping eyes.
Can you imagine what it’s like to be a buyer for some place like Ten Thousand Villages? Getting to travel far & wide, interacting with some of the strongest people that live in our world today… helping them tailor the beauty that exists in their culture and artisanal products into something that consumers in the U.S. would enjoy… it would be such a gift, ya know?
